It is beautiful, old, an amazing example of someones craftsmanship, and it displays extraordinarily well. Its fully functional, and it could be used for its intended purposes. It is believe it is made of iron, but it does have the silver look of nickel, kind of like pewter.
As most fireplace sets were iron or brass, this is very likely polished iron. It is obviously handmade, and extremely well made. It has lasted for a very long time.
This set is very heavy, as it is solid through and through, no electroplated coatings here. The shovel is attached with non-machine fasteners, it was hammered onto the handle with heated rivets. The tongs are also brilliantly made. One of the tong legs moves within the circular mechanism near the handle.
It is extremely sturdy with no play to that circular chamber. I have cleaned this set up somewhat, if you want to make it shine like it is brand new, you could certainly do that.I think it is beautiful as it is. It was obviously used for its intended purposes over time. Please zoom in on the pictures as they are some of the best descriptions, make sure it suits your needs and tastes. I know its a valuable set, but hard to price exactly. Feel free to make a reasonable offer.
Heres what I dont know. I dont know exactly what style to call this. It has English and early American details.
I dont know if this came over from England, or if this is an early American, Colonial, or Victorian era piece. Maybe you know something that I dont and are about to score an amazing deal.
